This term Mrs Robinson has been reading 'The One and Only Ivan'. It's about Ivan an easy-going gorilla who is use to humans watching his every move through the glass of his cage. He can hardly remember his life in the jungle or what happened to his family. That is, until a baby elephant called Ruby arrives. Suddenly Ivan sees his home thought new eyes and knows he must do some thing to make sure Ruby does not end up like him. Inspired by a true story this is a heart-warming and unforgettable tale of friend-ship, bravery and a courageous fight for freedom. The characters are; Ivan, Stella, Ruby, Bob, Julia and Not-Tag, Ivan teddy, also Mack and George. Stella is an elephant that is a very kind and loving elephant that cares for everyone. When a new baby elephant called Ruby arrives. Stella tells Ruby stories about her childhood and how she survived out in the wild. One day Stella passed away from a tragic foot infection and the only one Ruby had was Ivan who didn't know much about his past. Ivan is a mighty gorilla who loves Ruby and well, everyone! He is a master at painting and Mack sells them for $30 for just the painting or $45 with a frame. Ruby is another elephant that comes to the zoo and meets Ivan. Soon after she gets shipped away to another zoo filled with lots of other elephants and lives happily ever after. Our class has really enjoyed listening to this heart warming story. The story has lots of messages about never giving up. We recommend this story to animal lovers and students over 8 years old. This book can be found in our school library.
